Commonwealth Shared Scholarships 2027: How Nigerians and Other Eligible Students Can Study in the UK Fully Funded
Studying in the United Kingdom can be a life-changing opportunity, but the cost of tuition, accommodation and everyday living expenses prevents many talented African students from pursuing their ambitions.
The Commonwealth Shared Scholarships programme offers an opportunity for eligible students who have the academic ability and potential to make a difference in their communities but cannot afford postgraduate education in the UK.
For the 2027/2028 academic year, applications open on 10 November 2026 and close on 8 December 2026 at 4:00 pm GMT.
Here is everything you need to know before applying.
What is the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship?
The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship is a fully funded postgraduate scholarship supported by the UK government through the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC), in partnership with participating UK universities.
It enables eligible students from developing Commonwealth countries to undertake selected full-time master's degree programmes in the United Kingdom.
The scholarship is designed for applicants who intend to use their education to contribute to sustainable development in their home countries.
It is not available for undergraduate or PhD programmes.
What Does the Scholarship Cover?
Successful scholars receive:
- Full approved tuition fees.
- Return airfare between their home country and the UK.
- A monthly living allowance of £1,712, or £2,000 for students studying in the London metropolitan area, at the currently published rates.
- A warm clothing allowance, where applicable.
- Study-related travel and dissertation grants, where applicable.
- Contribution towards a mandatory tuberculosis test, where required.
- Additional support for eligible scholars with disabilities and certain qualifying family circumstances.
The scholarship normally lasts 12 months.
Although this is a fully funded opportunity, applicants with accompanying family members should understand that family expenses are not generally covered in full.
Who Can Apply?
Applicants must meet the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission's eligibility requirements.
These include:
- Being a citizen of, or having recognised refugee status in, an eligible Commonwealth country.
- Being permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.
- Holding at least a second-class upper (2:1) bachelor's degree, or a second-class lower (2:2) degree together with a relevant postgraduate qualification, usually a master's degree.
- Being available to begin studies in September or October 2027.
- Being unable to afford UK postgraduate education without the scholarship.
- Not having studied or worked for one academic year or more in a high-income country, subject to the programme's detailed rules.
- Meeting the admission requirements of the participating university.
Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Zambia, South Africa and several other Commonwealth countries are included in the eligibility list.
Not every African country is eligible. Applicants must verify their nationality and residence eligibility on the official website.
Which Universities and Courses Are Available?
The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship is available only for approved master's courses at participating UK universities.
You cannot select any UK university or master's programme and automatically qualify for the scholarship.
The approved course list for 2027/2028 is scheduled for publication in November 2026.
Applicants should select courses that match their academic backgrounds, professional interests and plans to contribute to development in their home countries.
Documents You Need
Start preparing these documents before applications open:
- Valid passport or eligible national identity document.
- Complete university transcripts for all higher education qualifications.
- Academic certificates and qualifications required by the university.
- At least two signed references meeting the CSC's formatting requirements.
- A carefully prepared development impact statement.
- Information about your education, employment, leadership and community activities.
- A study plan and personal statement.
Your chosen university may require additional documents, including proof of English language proficiency.
The CSC itself does not require IELTS, but individual universities may have English-language requirements.
How to Apply: Step by Step
Step 1: Confirm your eligibility
Review the official eligibility checklist, particularly nationality, residence, academic qualifications and previous study or employment in high-income countries.
Step 2: Choose an approved course
Use the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission's official list of participating universities and approved courses for 2027/2028 when it becomes available.
Step 3: Check the university admission process
You must apply for admission to your chosen university separately from the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship application. Follow the university's instructions and deadlines.
Step 4: Prepare your scholarship statements
Explain why you have chosen the course, the development challenges you want to address and how the qualification will help you make a measurable contribution after graduation.
Step 5: Complete your scholarship application
From 10 November 2026, use CSC Central, the official online application system, accessed through the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission website.
Step 6: Upload all required supporting documents
Ensure transcripts, identity documents and references are complete and in the required format. Missing documents can make your application ineligible.
Step 7: Submit before the deadline
The deadline is 8 December 2026 at 4:00 pm GMT.
Do not wait until the final day, when the application system may be especially busy.
Seven Ways to Improve Your Chances
1. Demonstrate a genuine development problem. Identify a specific issue in Nigeria or your home country, such as agricultural productivity, healthcare access, energy, education or public infrastructure.
2. Connect the problem to your proposed course. Explain precisely what knowledge and skills the degree will give you and how you will apply them.
3. Provide evidence of leadership. Use real examples from employment, volunteering, research or community initiatives. You do not need an impressive job title to demonstrate leadership.
4. Write a measurable development impact statement. Explain your proposed outcomes, intended beneficiaries, implementation timeline and how you would measure success.
5. Choose referees who know your work. Strong references should provide specific evidence of your abilities and potential, rather than generic praise.
6. Follow the university's requirements carefully. A strong scholarship application cannot compensate for failing to meet the chosen university's admission requirements.
7. Be truthful and specific. Avoid fabricated achievements, generic personal statements and unsupported claims. Authentic examples are more persuasive than exaggerated promises.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Some applicants lose opportunities because they apply for unapproved courses, submit incomplete transcripts, upload unsuitable references or fail to demonstrate a clear connection between their proposed studies and development needs.
Another common mistake is assuming that submitting a scholarship application automatically constitutes an application for university admission. These are separate requirements.
Is the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Free?
Yes. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission does not charge an application fee for its scholarships through its official application system.
Beware of individuals or organisations claiming they can guarantee scholarship selection in exchange for payment.
No legitimate adviser can guarantee a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship award.
